How to Choose the Best Chiropractor for Your Needs

Are you tempted to choose a name at random when searching for a chiropractor? Although that method may be quick, it won't guarantee you'll find a chiropractor who's best-suited to treat your condition. Before you make an appointment, follow these tips:

Read Referrals

About 70,000 chiropractors practice in the U.S., according to the American Chiropractic Association (ACA), which makes narrowing down your choices understandably difficult. Luckily, Google, Yelp, and other review sites offer valuable information regarding chiropractic offices.

Pay particular attention to reviews that mention your specific problem. If you're suffering from neck pain after a car accident, multiple reviews that mention successful whiplash treatment may mean that chiropractor is a good choice for you.

Consider the details if you notice any negative reviews. Complaints about the magazine or music selection in the waiting room obviously aren't as important as issues with the chiropractor's bedside manner or treatment results.

Ask your doctor or friends and family members for referrals. People you know can be good referral sources and may provide valuable information on a chiropractor's services, ease in making appointments, parking availability, and friendliness of the office staff.

If you need a little help finding a chiropractor, visit the "Find a Doctor" page on the ACA's website. Simply enter your zip code to retrieve a list of chiropractors in your area.

Take a Look at the Website's "About Us" Section

Most chiropractic websites provide information about the chiropractor's education and experience, in sections like "About Us" or "Meet the Team." Make sure a chiropractor you are considering graduated from an accredited chiropractic college and is licensed by your state's board of chiropractic examiners.

These sections may also mention particular areas of interest or special training or certifications. For example, a chiropractor may have furthered his or her education in sports medicine and passed a board exam offered by the American Chiropractic Board of Sports Physicians.

Prioritize Accessibility

Before you make an appointment, consider these questions:

  • Does the chiropractor offer hours that fit your schedule?
  • How many days per week is the office open?
  • Can you reach the office using public transportation, if needed?
  • Is the office handicap accessible?
  • Does the chiropractor accept your insurance?

What Types of Treatments and Services Are Offered?

Chiropractors offer a variety of services, including:

  • Spinal Manipulation (Adjustments) to Realign Vertebrae
  • Soft Tissue Therapies to Ease Muscle Tension, Knots, and Spasms
  • Flexion-Distraction Therapy to Relieve Pressure on Discs and Nerves in the Spine
  • Ultrasound Therapy to Ease Pain and Promote Healing in Deep Tissues
  • Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) to Relieve Pain with a Gentle Electrical Current

Spinal manipulation, one of the most common treatments chiropractors use, offers effective relief of back and neck pain, according to several research studies. In 2023, researchers published a comparison of the effectiveness of spinal manipulation and conservative therapy in the Journal of Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine. They concluded that chiropractic treatment seemed to be more effective than conservative care in reducing pain, increasing range of motion, and improving disability.

Are you experiencing pain due to arthritis, a sports injury, sciatica, herniated discs, or another painful condition? Check the website to ensure your chiropractor treats these issues. The chiropractor's website may include a section about the conditions treated, or you may need to call to determine if a particular chiropractor is experienced in treating your problem.

Visit the Office

Reviews, family referrals, and websites offer basic information, but there's no substitute for visiting the chiropractic office and meeting the chiropractor and staff. During your visit, pay attention to your surroundings. Is everything clean and comfortable? Does the office provide private exam and treatment rooms? Is the chiropractor willing to work with you to develop a treatment plan? Does the chiropractor clearly describe treatment options? Do you understand how much you'll pay for each visit? Are the chiropractor and staff friendly and empathetic?

Testimonials

  • "SUCCESS!!
I had been experiencing tightness in my lower left back and buttocks going down the exterior of my left leg for about six months. I tried adjusting my posture and doing frequent stretching exercises. Although the problem didn't get worse, neither did it improve.
After my first visit with Dr. Rich, I noticed a huge improvement. The pain down my leg reduced by 80% and the tightness in my back and buttocks improved too. Thus far I have had four sessions and continue to feel better with each visit. If not for Dr. Rich's treatments, who knows how long I would have continued living day to day with this irritating constant pain."

  • "Thank You!!
I want to thank you all so much for the care I received following my recent motorcycle accident.
I came to my therapy the following Tuesday with a knot in my back that felt the size of a racquetball. After three sessions of very deep and hard massage it was finally broken up and has not come back since.
Additionally all the work that Dr. Rich did on my spine, knees, left foot and shoulder joints have both relieved a great deal of pain and resulted in what I believe is an overall improvement in function.
All in all by the time Dr. Rich recently released me, I feel that my back and joints are in better condition than before the accident. They certainly feel better.
    I cannot thank you enough."

  • "I Feel Great!
I started treatment with Dr. Rich and Christina, his wonderful massage therapist about two months ago. I had an appointment to see the nutritionist and arrived early so someone suggested to get a massage and I shared my neck and shoulder discomfort.
I ended up being treated by Dr. Rich and he adjusted my neck, back and shoulder and I could not be happier. I never thought that all of my neck, shoulder and back issues would go away. I am a nurse and had been suffering with this pain for about a year. I am now able to work out and use my shoulder. My neck doesn't hurt and I am a happier person.
Thank you so much Dr. Rich and Christina!"
